D2-(somewhere in the afternoon) Tower Explorers

Sylvain was walking around the room looking at the maps to see if any had any mention of the thirteenth tower. Records or any written down log would have been great too.

''Surely SOMEBODY ventured there at one point''

There were, actually. In fact, there are lots of notes on the map around it. Mostly questions curious notes. Hearing things, seeing things, a hand-drawn survey of the location.

One curious thing on the map is a yellow piece of paper, aged with time, of a drawn picture of the tower. It has small tidbits of notes about the stonework of it. What is more confusing, however, is the means of which it is displayed.

Pointing to the tower itself, there is a list of text that is underlined and written in large text.

"Myiojp nts Lscdhwphfv Lzqqf."

''Cooooool.''

Codes and cyphers? Sweet mystery right there!

Sylvain looked closer at the letters, trying to guess what it meant

Sylvain gazed at it intently

History check, hard for the cypher. INT: 2eA+3eD 1 failure, 1 advantage

But had no actual clue

''Mmmmh I'll have to bring that to someone''

With that he copied the cypher and gathered up most writing he could find

There are a few notes and attempts to solve the mystery behind it, and although they did not come close, learning from their failures may do you well in your attempt to finally have it become a success.

Sylvain paid careful attention to write everything down.

''That should help a bit''

With that he continued to check around, leaving after sastisfied

"Syl what the hell are you up to?" Fitz peers at his housemate. "Are you...studying?"

''More or less'' he replied ''I am researching about the thirteenth tower''

He lifted up his notes

''Alot of our house explored there over the years''

"Oh thank God, I thought my title of Fifth Year Bookworm was in trouble."

Fitz peers over the notes. "I'm not shocked that someone took a look, more that we dont make a ritual of ending the underclassmen if we knew anything."

Fitzs brow wrinkles as he starts to read. "Did one of us...make a cypher?"

''Yeah. Curious, right?''

he grinned ear to ear

''I've not been able to figure it out but the new girl, Layla, is interested in the tower and might be able to''

"Aww, is someone feeling a little Horny?" Fitz nudges Sylvain teasingly. "She is cute, I don't blame you.

Fitz peers at the notes, trying to see if anything jumps out at him.

''I don't intend to join the horned serpents, I assure you. If anything she's more thunderbird then anything else''

replied Sylvain, misunderstanding the tease

You recognize the method used in this to be a most likely twist of the Vigenere cipher method, created in the 16th century by a French diplomat with the same name. It can be pretty complicated to solve to the average layman without the passphrase. Once you figured that out, you could use the amount of letters and the word or words itself to solve the word.

As for what that Passphrase is, well, that is the question, isn't it?

"Well bring her to our next party then. Maybe we can corrupt her."

Fitz seems distant as he grabs at the papers. He has a puzzle to solve, speaking aloud but no longer paying attention.

"Well, short words let you know what vowels. Assuming its English, E is the most common letter. Look for common prefixes and suffixes: -pre, -ing, -en, -an..."

Fitz keeps muttering to himself as he pulls out a quill and a sheaf of parchment.

Fitz looks up. "Is there more?"
