Ask me your questions, I am not afraid.

Would talents such as defensive duelling and duelist give bonuses like duelist giving a boost even though this isn't melee? And could you activate defensive duelling to upgrade your check or downgrade the difficulty?

Any talent that would make sense to apply in the current situation (as this is basically a summary of you doing a full duel) would apply in your roll. So if you can do something to decrease the difficulty or gain a boost to your roll, throw it in.

Just make sure to mention it in the description.

So i guess with defensive duelist the problem comes in where by RAW the talent allows you to suffer strain to upgrade incoming attacks but in this scenario our opponent is not rolling so I was wondering if the talent could be repurposed to fit the event since it does make sense for it to apply in some way.

Make it so.

what does this mean? How does defensive duelist work here? Mechanically? It looks as if it's being used to suffer strain, then upgrade one's skill? And on top of that we can spend a story point to upgrade further?

Just use it for free without taking strain damage in this one instance. Also, reduce the difficulty by one for the purposes of this roll. So just consider it you getting "Left Handed" bonus without having to roll a challenge dice if that is the route you wish to go.

Also, as of this current point in time, you do not have access to story points. Rahvin will explain what is going on with them on D2.
