Halloween Spooktackular
Shrieking skulls will shock your soul!

First comes the feast - all sorts of foods from across the continent, specialty dishes for this time of year featuring a variety of seasonal gourds and vegetables. Mixed throughout the food are little edible poppers that explode with a small snap when bitten in to, giving a harmless surprise to the unfortunate student. The mood in the hall is jovial. Small prank spells fly from student to student, the worst pulled aside by teachers for a brief reprimand.

The meal over, the tables are pushed to the sides where they become home to treats and drinks for the evening as the room darkens and music begins. It's a variety of music from wailing wizards and witches throughout the ages though it seems like everyone's favourite No-Maj teacher has brought an iPhone full of modern pop songs from the no-maj world to mix in.

Throughout the event, teachers wade through crowds in their own costumes. The occasional glance of the headmaster is caught as he seems to appear randomly throughout the evening, chattering with students and professors alike before moving on, his loud, jovial laughter sometimes drowning out almost all other noise.

"Have fun!" he tells the students he talks to. "This is a true night to enjoy!"

OOC Mechanics: For the most part, the Halloween Spooktackular is a roleplay thread. Outside of mechanics listed below, you're free to roleplay as you wish (though we might occasionally drop in small mini-events in the thread that will be linked back up here for you to participate in). It's time to have fun, after all!

Your date, though? That's the important part as far as the rest of the school is concerned - and your Popularity depends on it. For each point of Popularity your date is below you, you have +1 Setback dice for all Popularity rolls from this moment until Holiday Break. For each point of Popularity your date is above you, you have +1 Boost dice for all Popularity rolls from this moment until Holiday Break.

Going stag? Well, you'll need to look cool doing it - peer pressure is a pain. Roll a Cool (Presence) check with a number of difficulty dice equal to your own Popularity; the more Popular you are, the more is expected of you socially (the cycle of high school life can be cruel). On a success, you're good - for you, not bringing a date is the cool thing. On a failure, though, other students start to talk - you gain +1 Setback dice for all Popularity rolls from this moment until Holiday Break. Each Advantage on the final roll total can be converted to 1 Success, and each Threat on the final roll total will cause 1 Strain; on a Triumph, you automatically succeed (but still apply any Threats on the final roll to Strain).

Deciding to skip out entirely? Your absence might be noted and people might start to talk. If you still want to try, drop us a note in your personal forum and we'll handle your rolls.

Arlington arrived by himself. There were a few glances his way. But, for the most part, the lanky redhead was ignored.

He found a comfortable section of wall to lean against and watched everyone else.

Ondine arrived disguised as someone akin muggle preppy schoolgirl, a style she had been shunning during her education, though the details of her hair, makeup and accessories suggested Latin, perhaps Caribbean. For one who was wearing masks daily having one for a costume party seemed disingenuous.

She wasn't alone. And who she wasn't alone with might have been the answer as to whence this particular outfit had been conceived.

Holding her hand was the tall, lanky, bookish seeker for the Wampus. Instead of a full costume, he had spent time and practice applying make up. He looked a very convincing calavera next to the preppy schoolgirl. Even his hands had been detailed to look like skeleton manos. His hair was slicked and combed back hard, his widows peak quite striking.

"C'mon Hecate, don't be shy!" Grace was having the time of her life...well, that was a bit strong. But! She did decide to have fun tonight. Appropriately, she decided to dress up.

Image

"You look great!

"Really? Thanks Grace." The Pukwitch was a bit self-consious, but did grab hold of Grace's hand as they walked into the ball room. "Never thought I'd have a date for tonight." The Graves girl mumbled. Unlike Grace, she went for a simple yellow gown, in her House's color, and a yellow flower in her hair.

Finally, the two sat down at a table, starting with punch and dinner first, giggling over something or other. Potions homework, probably.

With the high concentration of the South between them, it was only natural for Raul and Ondine to walk straight into dancing once some vintage Latin rhythms broke the monotony of modern pop.

"Let's see if you've taught me well." She supported her hips with both hands and lifted her chin, leaning backward as the high-heeled front foot was extended forth for balance.

Xanthe did not dress up. She didn't even know *how* to! Sure, she'd made sure she was *presentable* and everything, but how did one dress up for one of these things anyhow? Besides, people would just make jokes about her again anyway. Probably like how she didn't need a costume to be creepy or spooky or something.

Sigh.

At least she had a date. That was... quite something. She still wasn't sure it wasn't a prank. Where was he anyway, he should be coming right?

"Oh good, I wasn't sure if I had scared you off or not."

Fitz typically wore nice clothing, but usually with...disdain, almost. His hair was usually ruffled and tie askew, but now it was combed back, and with robes tailored to look as if they had belonged to a suit-coat. When everything came together he would actually look...presentable?

"Whoo" Fitz lets out a low whistle at some of the outfits and costumes that the others have gotten into. "They keep going more extreme each year. Anyways..." Fitz offers his arm to Xanthe. "Shall we?"

Unlike the practice the night before, this was slightly more uptempo. The Wampus Skeleton grinned as he drew his date closer. Their hips moving in sync with the rhythm. Leading up, then back, on the dance floor.

"Eres un natural, Ondine." He spoke as they danced, genuinely looking like they were having a grand time.

Cian didn't really "dress up" so much as wear some casual, nice looking clothes and put on some slightly macabre skeleton-esque facepaint that had black tears running down the bone. In a house famed for it's passions, and healers, there was sure to have been some Pukwudgie who was able to do it for him... or maybe it was a hidden talent of Cians. Question was really if he would tell anyone, or if anyone would even believe him if he did?

Regardless, he came to the dance alone. Though, he put up a good face as usual. Slightly aloof, uncaring. That was his motto, but the rest of the school wouldn't believe it. There were few things more public than standing out in the Thunderbird hall looking for, and talking to, a specific someone every day. What hopes he might have had for "appearing like coming alone was a choice" were dashed by the rather easily spread notion that he'd been seeking a date unsuccessfully.

Still, he brushed it off with his usual manner and stalked around the hall with a mind for fun.

Trent and Mischa were there, adding the appropriate amount of flame to their flaming.

As Mischa was still, and sparkling, pink haired, Trent had gone sky blue. Their outfits matched in style and were domino'd. Where one had black, the other had white and vice versa.

Currently they were having too much fun actually dancing to care about anyone else or the apparent 'total lameness' of the thing.

She was relieved to see he had in fact shown up... it would've sucked if the whole thing had been a joke after all. But that didn't mean there was suddenly no awkwardness or anything. Still, she took his arm, as one was supposed to do when it was offered, and nodded.

"Hey Cian!" Hecate waved at her House mate with a smile. "You look good."

The girls were sitting next to each other, so Hecate was across from Cian diagonally.

"Hey bad boy." Grace smirked at Cian. "You struck out?" She asked cheekily, before offering a glass of punch to him.

Layla had gone into a lot of thinking for her outfit. The whole idea of a dress-up dance seemed ridiculous to her; a dance was a dance! You needed to look nice, not be in some silly childish Halloween outfit! A point she had complained about numerous times to anyone who listened (with both Grace and Sylv having to suffer it the most, as well as its comparison to Hogwarts).

She had eventually found a dress she liked, and used a little magic to make it stand out more:

Image

The lights were moving like little ghosts, or little fireflies. It was cute in her mind, but still fit the 'Halloween' look.

She waited for Sylv to arrive before entering, noting how others looked and mentally cursing herself for not actually arranging a matching look.

If only they did it like Hogwarts....

Jerric hadn't been able to land a date but that certainly wasnt going to stop him from showing up and having a good time and letting off some steam after some somewhat stressful mid-terms.

Jay walked into the dance looking cool as a cucumber. He had decided not to wear a costume and instead wore a well tailored suit. He scanned the area and saw a few familiar faces but decided to grab some punch and just chill for a minute before striking up conversation.

Soon Sylvain would make his arrival. He had a torrific idea about his costume, one that was quite ironic considering the circumstances...possibly making a statement

He wondered if he would be mistaken for somebody else's uncle or some random wizard.

Image

Here came Sylvain...dressed as a halloween wizard!

It was a great costume. Layla didn't even recognize him!

...which was an issue, as Layla was looking around tryingto work out where Sylv was.

Did he decide not to turn up?

The 'wizard' scanned the room and, noticing Layla, moved toward her...trying not to bump into the crowds here

''Hey'' said he, awkwardness and accent recognizable ''Hum...nice dress...''

There was a few blinks, and Layla turned to look at the wise old wizard stereotype.

That voice...it can't be...

"Sylv? Is that you?"

''I don't guess anyone here considers 'wizards' to be something to be costumed as...revenge for all the native american costumes out there.''

He held a hand up towards Layla

''I just hope I don't look like someone's actual grandfather''
