[Day Three, Mid-Term] This is Fine

Postby Rahvin » Wed Nov 20, 2019 5:53 am

This is Fine

While it may not be your best class, this certainly isn't your worst class either. It might be a bit of effort, but you should be able to pull off a pass on this one - as long as there aren't any curve balls.

OOC Mechanics:
What Class is This, Anyways?
Select a skill which is neither your highest nor your lowest from the following:
  • any Classroom skill
  • Broomsmanship
  • Curses
  • Countercurse
  • Jinx & Hexes
  • Healing
  • Muggle Studies
How Do You Want to Do This?
Pick a Characteristic; make an explanation for how this characteristic is working with the selected skill. For example, perhaps you use Agility for your Countercurse because you've become extremely fast at casting them or perhaps you use Cunning because you're smart enough to know when you use them.

Gonna Build a Dice Pool!
Your dice pool for this event will be constructed using your selected Characteristic and Skill; it will be rolled against a Hard difficulty, upgraded once. If you wish, you may spend a Story Point to remove the difficulty upgrade.

Peanut Butter Study Time!
So, you've been studying, right? It's time for that to pay off. Across all your Mid-Terms, you have access to 6 Study Points. You may spend a Study Point to add a Boost dice to this dice pool.

Yeah, This is Big Brain Time!
Not everyone relies on studying though. Sometimes, you just sort of... know. Across all your Mid-Terms, you have access to Knowledge Points equal to your Intellect. You may spend an Intellect Point to upgrade a die in this dice pool.

... and Watch This!
Roll your dice pool. If you receive even a single Success, you pass - congratulations! Additional symbols may be spent as such:
  • Advantage: You may spend 1 Advantage to gain 10 House Points for your House.
  • Triumph: You may refund one Study Point OR one Knowledge Point spent on this roll. Alternatively, you may spend the Triumph as an Advantage.
  • Threat: A GM will spend a Threat to give you one Stress.
  • Despair: If this is rolled, a GM will spend it and you will lose 10 House Points for your House. Alternatively, a GM may spend it to cancel up to 2 Advantages.

Transfigurations. The art of turning something into something. Layla didn't get to use this skill as much as she'd like to. In fact, outside of once in the class earlier in the year...she hadn't even looked at them.

I should have studied more...but I was never going to find out more about that tower otherwise!

Then the student in front of her quite badly screwed up, leaving a table half turned into a cat. It looked like it was suffering, so Layla stepped forward and;

"Reparifarge!"

A swish of her wand, and the table was back to being a table.

"..Oh, I stepped out of line" she looked slightly embarrassed, but the teacher shook her head.

"You were next anyway dear, and you passed while undoing the damage from before. Good work!"

...three for three! Points for her house as well, it was all good today. Her midterms had been smashed out.

D3 Mid-term Middle skill test. Choosing Transfiguration, and Willpower. Hard difficult upgraded once. 2 study points for 2 boost dice: 2eP+2eA+2eB+2eD+1eC 3 successes, 1 advantage

Grace looked over her cauldron, tentatively sniffing into the air above it, her eyes focusing on the color of the fumes wafting out of the thick brew.

Luckily for her, it was the Invigorating Draught as a test for the day, and she even managed to snag good ingredients this time!

Woohoo!

She placed her spoon to the side, feeling energized just from looking at the brown, murky potion. This was a winner for sure!

For Defense Against the Dark Arts, Fitz really puzzles over what to do. It really is a quandary: the school wants them to know enough about the Dark Arts to defend against it, but knowing too much...well, he had been chewed out for lifting a bust out of turn. Fitz did not want to imagine the repercussions of going overboard with something actually dangerous.

So, Fitz settled on researching something that was extremely advanced magic, beyond N.E.W.T. level, and that could actually have use in disposing of dangerous cursed objects: Fiendfyre. It was a controlled classroom environment, not a battlefield or duel, where Fitz could focus purely on the theory of what he as going to do do.

As he raises his wand, he can feel how much his wand likes it, almost as if a silent growl travels along his arm.

This is Fine-Curses(Intellect)-1 Knowledge Point-2 Study Points: 2eP+2eA+2eB+1eC+2eD 4 successes, 1 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

A fiery shape erupts form the end of Fitz's wand. It lunges ahead on all formed, the figure taking a vaguely wolf like shape, baying its head toward the ceiling in a silent howl. It turns its head toward the assembled class, almost appearing...hungry.

And Fitz dismisses the smell, banishing the flame before doubling over from exertion. Professor Maximus gives him a tight smile and nod and send the next student forward.

(Pass, 1 strain for Fitz)

The Black Walnut wand felt comfortable in his hand. Raul narrowed his eyes, studying the various incantations and notes. His time came up to perform the selected spell. Biting his lower lip in deep thought, he exhaled.

"Densaugeo!"

It was a textbook example of the tooth growing hex. So focused on technique... that he had pointed his wand at the Professor.

It was a struggle for the professor to say it but...

"Ten Pointh fffrum Wamputh!"

Outcome: Disastrous Success. 2 strain from accidentally hexing the professor, -10 House Points from Wampus

Divination was tricky. It was just too abstract for Arlington to wrap his mind around. He knew that a basic grasp of it could be important during next year's wandlore studies, but the class had been a struggle so far. He had managed the initial part of the test alright, but hadn't expected Xylomancy to be in the final portion.

He frowned down at the shape the twigs had formed, tilting his head to one side, then the other. "It looks kind of like a bird... I think Thunderbirds will do well this year."

Arlington didn't think it was the best response, but it was all he could come up with on the spot. It felt right, which was apparently the important part.

Broomsmanship wasn't the sort of cerebral pursuit people often assumed Xanthe was into, despite being a Thunderbird. Still, she wasn't half bad at it. In fact, no, scratch that, she was pretty damn *amazing*, if she said so herself. She showcased some exceptional control, and at breaknecking speed too. If this particular performance was anything to indicate, she might be a solid pick for one of the teams... at least, she hoped she'd be. She hoped they'd be watching, maybe approach her after about trying out even. Wouldn't that be something?

For now though, she passed with flying colors. Pun intended.

It wasn't anything flashy, maybe he'd learned? He had, really, taken certain words made by certain professors to heart. Wasn't much need to be too out there when it came to Midterms, he felt. So long as he passed, really, that's what mattered. Competence.

Still, he wouldn't say that to anyone. So, he flashed a couple grins and a couple raised brows at those he could. Found it in himself to manage a bit of fun, even on test day.

Hard for a muggle born to fail muggle studies, he figured.

Ondine decided to make pigs fly. For the purpose, she crafted a special amulet that she attached to the collar of Klondike Claudina, the proudest great white sow in all of Ilvermorny, then by sheer will and brusqueness she commandingly sent the oinking and squealing glory high over the towers of Ilvermorny, an effort that drew some sweat from her armpits.

There was much cheer, but the professor was only moderately impressed.

Ostie de Calisse

Wizards had no clue about the human world

NOT

ONE

GODDAM

CLUE

And that would make this test super easy with a few exploits. Sylvain did not need to be an expert, he just needed to 'get' certain key concepts to razzle the teachers. Not super hard considering his fixation on cat videos.

How about the internet and social media? Simple: while the internet allowed oneself to successfully broadcast across the world bypassing the need of approval from the gatekeepers of traditionnal media, the capitalist mindset still ended up using it to perpetuate a society of the spectacle born in regular media and event exacerbate it like the popular breadtube youtuber Peter Coffin talks about in his book and videos...

Jerric was hoping to blow off some steam from his potions midterm debacle. He was clearly a little heated as he seated his broom for his broomanship midterm. But his flying was on point, he dove and spun and turned through the objectives. He got a little over zealous however and hit the last turn of the course a little harder than he meant to making it hard for him to stop. He completed the course in good time but he accidentally barrelled into the broomsmanship instructor who looked none to pleased but a watching professor found it hilarious and awarded Wampus 10 points.

(Spending advantage for house points unless GM spends despair to cancel)

The History exam. A presentation on the Crimes of Gellert Grindelwald by Mischa Primakov.

Well his family had first hand experience of the subject, so Mischa could add in well known (and totally safe to reveal) anecdotes from his own relatives on this subject, and his natural charisma managed to spin out a rather basic understanding of the subject to quite an entertaining lecture on the rather turbulent and troubling times back in the last century.

He did omit certain Primakov family members though . . . the ones they NEVER talked about these days.

Also he still had pink hair . . . and it sparkled.
